Getting to the Kasbah of the Oudayas

Getting to the Kasbah of the Oudayas

The Kasbah of the Oudayas sits on the Bouregreg’s left bank, and you can reach it from Agdal by local transport or a city walk. It is a 15-minute walk from downtown Rabat; from the hotel in Agdal, it is about 3.4 km away.

Bab Oudaia, the imposing Almohad gate, marks the entrance. If you are walking from central Rabat, use the gate as your arrival point, then continue into the neighborhood rather than treating the kasbah as a single viewpoint.

The kasbah is open daily from 09:00 to 20:00. Opening times can change, so check Visit Rabat’s official site before you go.

Walking the lanes and viewpoints

Walking the lanes and viewpoints

The kasbah’s lanes lead through a historic neighborhood that looks over the Bouregreg estuary and toward the river mouth. Its position gives the visit a clear sequence: enter through Bab Oudaia, wander the residential lanes, then make time for the garden and river outlooks.

The Almohads developed the kasbah in the 11th century. Moriscos arriving from Andalusia revived it from 1609, and the area later took its name from the Oudayas. The kasbah was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with the medina of Rabat in 2012.

For a wider Rabat itinerary, you can pair the visit with a one-day route through Rabat from Agdal.

Andalusian Gardens and access

Andalusian Gardens and access

The Andalusian Garden is inside the Kasbah of the Oudayas, making it an easy stop between the lanes and the river views. Its shaded paths pass fountains, ponds, Mediterranean plants, bougainvillea and orange trees.

Created in the 1920s, the garden was inspired by Hispano-Moorish gardens. It is open daily from 07:00 to 19:00, with free admission and access for all.

The National Museum of Adornment is also in the kasbah. Its permanent exhibition focuses on Moroccan adornment and jewelry, arranged in five independent sections. The museum occupies a building completed between 1672 and 1694 during Sultan Moulay Ismail’s reign.

It is open from 10:00 to 18:00 daily except Tuesday; admission is 15 DH for Moroccan visitors under 18, 30 DH for Moroccan adults and 60 DH for foreign visitors. Check the National Foundation of Museums’ official site before planning around museum hours or prices.

The kasbah’s elevated position opens onto the Bouregreg estuary and its connection to the river mouth. Café Maure, inside the kasbah, is a place to pause for terrace views toward the estuary, the Atlantic Ocean and Salé.

Plage des Oudayas is another nearby landmark in the Oudayas area. Together, the waterfront setting and the fortress lanes give the visit a natural progression: explore inside the walls, then turn toward the river and coast.

Pairing the kasbah with the medina

The kasbah and Rabat’s medina make a natural pairing, and the kasbah is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the medina. You can visit the Oudayas first, then continue into the medina to see another part of Rabat’s historic center.

For ideas on what to look for in the old town, what to see in Rabat Medina and along Rue des Consuls makes a useful companion to a walk through the kasbah.
